No-gi jiu-jitsu has exploded in the last five years and the Memphis area is no exception. If you came to BJJ through MMA, ADCC, or just watching highlights on YouTube, our no-gi program is built for you.
What Makes No-Gi Different
Without the friction of the gi, no-gi jiu-jitsu moves faster, rewards explosive movement, and emphasizes leg locks, body locks, and dynamic guard play. It's the version of BJJ closest to MMA and to real-life self-defense.
Our no-gi curriculum trains the modern game — wrestling integration, leg lock entries, body lock passing — without ignoring the classical positions that still win matches.
What To Wear
Some of our no-gi students train in rash guards and grappling shorts. The majority just train in comfortable workout clothes — a t-shirt or athletic top and shorts or leggings without zippers or pockets. Wear what you've got.
Who No-Gi Is For
Memphis-area students who already train gi BJJ and want a faster, more dynamic complement. MMA fighters and aspiring fighters. Wrestlers who want to add submissions to their game. Anyone who just prefers the feel of grappling without sleeves and lapels.
If you're a complete beginner, no-gi is also a great place to start — many students never train gi at all.
Built For The Memphis-Area Grappling Scene
The Memphis area has produced more high-level grapplers than people realize. If you want to be part of that scene, train alongside competitors, and push your game, you have a home at Shackelford's.
