Where to Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Near Memphis, TN

A no-fluff guide to finding a real BJJ gym in the Memphis metro — what to look for, what to avoid, and how to spot a school worth your time.

By Coach JD ShackelfordApril 12, 2025

Searching for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu near Memphis, TN can feel overwhelming. There are hobby clubs, side-of-the-gym programs, and a handful of legit academies — and to a beginner they all look the same on Google. This guide walks you through exactly what to look for when you visit a BJJ gym in the Memphis area, whether you live in Germantown, Cordova, Collierville, Bartlett, or just across the state line in Olive Branch or Southaven.

1. Look for an active, mixed-experience mat

Walk in 15 minutes before class. You should see a mix of white belts, blue belts, purple belts, and at least one brown or black belt actively training. A healthy Memphis-area BJJ school has people who started six months ago next to people who've been on the mat for a decade. Check the gym's class schedule too — a serious school runs multiple classes a week, not one or two.

2. Ask about the head coach's background

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lineage art. Your head instructor should be able to tell you who promoted them and trace that line back to one of the major BJJ families. At Shackelford's MMA Center, Coach JD is a BJJ black belt who has been training since 1999 — he had a successful MMA and jiu-jitsu career and opened his first gym in 2005. Ask any school you visit the same question and see what you hear.

3. Try a real class, not a sales pitch

Any BJJ school worth its mats will let you try a class for free. At Shackelford's MMA Center we offer a free trial class for every adult and kid in the Memphis area. You'll warm up, drill a technique, and watch live training. No high-pressure pitch. If you already know you want to start as an adult, our BJJ for Adults & Beginners program is the right entry point.

4. Watch how the kids' class is run

Even if you're an adult looking to train, the kids' class tells you everything about a school's standards. At our gym that program is called Junior Warriors — ages 9 through 15, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:20 to 6:20pm. Are coaches engaged? Do kids look focused but happy? Is there real technique, or just running games?

5. Location matters more than you think

If the gym is 45 minutes away, you'll stop going by week six — though some of our most dedicated Memphis-area students do drive close to an hour each way to be on these mats. We sit just south of the state line in Olive Branch — a 15–25 minute drive from most of the Memphis metro, including East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Cordova, and Bartlett.
