When We Train In Olive Branch

Shackelford's MMA Center is the Memphis metro's home for authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We run a focused weekly schedule — two adult evening classes, an early-morning adult class, and two Junior Warriors kids' classes — so working adults, parents, students, and law-enforcement professionals from East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Southaven, Olive Branch, and Horn Lake can all find a time that fits. Every class on this page is taught by Coach JD personally, and every new student gets a free trial — no contracts, no upsell, just an honest first class on the mat.

Adults BJJ — Tuesday & Thursday Evenings

Our 7:00 PM adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are the easiest entry point for beginners. Each class runs 80 minutes: warm-up, technique instruction, partner drilling, and an optional 20-minute live training (rolling) window at the end. You can leave early on day one, watch from the side, or jump in — it's your call. We teach the gi and no-gi curriculum on a rotating basis so every student gets exposure to both before they commit to either style.

5:30 AM Tuesday — Before-Work BJJ

Adults who can't make evenings train at 5:30 AM Tuesday. It's the same 80-minute format, the same curriculum, and the same optional rolling at the end. Most morning students are commuters from Memphis, parents who want their evenings back, or shift workers — everyone is welcome and the room is supportive.

Junior Warriors (Ages 9–15)

Kids' Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu meets Tuesday and Thursday at 5:20 PM. Junior Warriors is built around real BJJ skills — bullying defense, takedowns, escapes, controls, and submissions — taught in age-appropriate progressions. Confidence and respect are not slogans here; they're the byproduct of doing hard things well alongside coaches who care. Most parents see a change in their kid's posture and self-talk inside the first month.

What To Expect On Your First Class

Show up 15 minutes early in athletic clothes — shorts, t-shirt, no shoes on the mat. We have loaner gis if you'd like one. Coach JD will introduce you, pair you with a friendly training partner, and walk you through the warm-up and a beginner-friendly technique. You will not be thrown into live sparring on day one. Most beginners leave their first class smiling and a little sore — and come back.

Schedule FAQ

Do I need to sign up for a specific class time?

Yes — book your free trial first via the contact form or call (901) 582-5558 so we know to expect you. After that, drop into any scheduled class that fits.

How often should a beginner train?

Two classes per week is the sweet spot for the first 90 days. It's enough to build real skill without burning out — and it's why our Tuesday/Thursday adult schedule is structured the way it is.

Is there a class for women or self-defense specifically?

Adult BJJ is co-ed and beginner-friendly, and women train in every class. If you'd like to read more about why BJJ is the best self-defense art for women, see our BJJ for Women page.

What's the difference between gi and no-gi?

Gi training uses the traditional kimono and emphasizes grip-based control. No-gi is faster, more athletic, and closer to MMA grappling. We rotate both — see our no-gi page for the full breakdown.

Where are you located?
