Most Memphis-area adults who want to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu never walk into a gym because they assume they'll get hurt or look stupid. Our adult and beginner BJJ program is engineered to answer neither.
Built For Day-One Beginners
Class structure: 1 hour of instruction and drilling, followed by 20 minutes of optional live training (also called rolling). The coach demonstrates one technique. You drill it with a partner. You get corrections. You leave knowing one thing well — not ten things poorly.
Live training is always optional. Many of our Memphis-area students drill for six to eight weeks before they ever roll. That's normal and encouraged — though most folks find rolling is the most fun part of the night.
Real Coaching, No Ego
Head coach and owner JD has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1999, with a successful MMA and jiu-jitsu career behind him. He opened his first gym in 2005. You'll get hands-on corrections from someone who has spent more than two decades on the mat.
We don't tolerate ego on the mat — from coaches, from upper belts, or from anybody. The Memphis-area BJJ scene is small, and our reputation matters to us.
Schedule That Works For Working Adults
Adult BJJ meets Monday 7pm (Hernando), Tuesday 5:30am and 7pm (Olive Branch), Wednesday 7pm (Hernando), and Thursday 7pm (Olive Branch). Whether you're commuting from downtown Memphis, Germantown, Collierville, Cordova, Bartlett, Olive Branch, Southaven, or Hernando, there's a slot that fits your week.
Several of our students happily drive close to an hour each way to train here. That should tell you something about the room.
What You'll Actually Learn
Self-defense fundamentals, positional control, the most efficient submissions in modern BJJ, and how to think under pressure. By month three you'll handle yourself in situations that would have terrified you on day one.

Frequently Asked Questions
People Also Ask
How long does it take to get a blue belt?
Most consistent adult students earn a blue belt in 18 to 30 months of regular training. There's no rush — promotions reflect real skill, not time on the mat.
Is BJJ safe for adults over 40?
Yes. BJJ has no striking and we pair partners thoughtfully. We have students training well into their 50s and 60s.
Can I train BJJ if I have a desk job?
Most of our adult students do — that's exactly why they're here. BJJ undoes the damage of sitting all day better than almost any other activity.
